Comments
This hoard of 45 electrum coins from Gordion is one of the best collections of this early type of coin from a controlled archaeological context. The coins were found in a building of the Middle Phrygian citadel, Building R, in a layer of collapsed mudbrick; no container was found. The 26 third-staters, 1 sixth-stater, and 18 twelfth-staters are all of the same type, with a lion’s head facing right on the obverse and incuse punches on the reverse, similar to Nos. 17-21 from Sardis and Ephesus - one of the most common type of Lydian coin. A number of the coins share common obverse and reverse dies. This consistency is a marked contrast to the coins from the Artemision at Ephesus or to the later hoard from Old Smyrna (No. 32.1-32.2, 32.3, 32.4-32.6, 32.7-32.20), both of which included a much wider variety of coin types: the Ephesus collection included blank coins without any stamp and coins with a variety of devices and inscriptions. The coin types are slightly later than those found at the Artemision at Ephesus. The discovery of these electrum coins, which are rarely found outside the Lydian sphere of influence, at Gordion, the old Phrygian capital, emphasizes the fact that Gordion was an important regional capital under the Lydian empire; compare the quantities of Lydian and Lydianizing pottery from the site, e.g. Nos. 107-112.
