- Comments
- From a Lydian house (Area 1, with 16, 62, 64, 65, 66, 68, 72, 73, 75, 81, 87, 88, 96, 97, 100, 103, 137, 138), together with another Attic black-figure cup, No. 103. These two complete and closely datable cups, this one not much earlier than the mid-sixth century, the other not much later, are among the best evidence for the date of the destruction of the houses, and hence of the fortification, which was destroyed at the same time, and the identification of this destruction level as the capture of Sardis by Cyrus of Persia (see Cahill, “The Persian Sack of Sardis”). Athenian pottery had begun to be imported to Sardis only about a generation before the cup was made.
